Report: Porsche 918 Spyder to contest 2011 Nürburgring 24

Report: Porsche 918 Spyder to contest 2011 Nürburgring 24Porsche made an impressive showing at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring this year with its 911 GT3 R Hybrid. But don't think for even one power-boosted second that its hybrid initiative was a one-time affair for the Stuttgart-based automaker. Not, at least, if the latest reports from Germany prove accurate.

Video: Fifth Gear pits Audi R8 Spyder vs. Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet

Video: Fifth Gear pits Audi R8 Spyder vs. Porsche 911 Turbo CabrioletThe problem with physics is that it is largely immutable. Less mass plus more low-end torque and comparable power generally equates to better performance. Take, for example, the Porsche 911 Turbo convertible and the Audi R8 V10 Spyder. As much as we love the design of the R8, it is rather porky at 3,792 pounds. At 3,627 pounds, the Turbo convertible is probably the heaviest 911 ever, but it's still got a 165-pound advantage over the Audi.

Ferrari 612 GTO by Sasha Selipanov

Ferrari 612 GTO by Sasha SelipanovJust about every time Ferrari comes up with a new variant of one of its supercars – be it the Scuderia, Spider, Challenge, XX or what-have-you – someone takes it upon themselves to imagine what another Prancing Horse from the stable would look like with the same treatment. Some come out looking better than others, but push comes to shove, there is no 458XX, no 599 Challenge and no California Scuderia. Interesting facts

" A new relief version of the horse was proposed in 1963, but this too met with little enthusiasm. However, its development went ahead, so that it could be used if necessary on the rear of the car, as it was on the Mondial in 1988-89. And that was how the ornamental horse, destined to become an extremely familiar sight, came to be created, almost unwanted. It was to remain substantially the same for over 30 years, adorning the back of nearly all Ferrari models, with only small variations to the colour and size. "
